In honor of our Veterans and Veteran's Day, the MHHRA Diversity Committee is pleased to offer a special panel discussion on the topic of recruitment, hiring, and retention of the many talented veterans and current military guard in our communities.  The evening's discussion will focus on why hiring veterans and keeping current active military employed is not just the right thing to do, but is in fact a smart investment on return. Veterans and current military guard bring a lot of valuable skill sets and great work ethic to the workplace.  However, the transition to civilian life and maintaining your job while in the guard can be very challenging.   Join us for a lively and practical discussion about ways employers can help veterans successfully transition back into the workplace, assist current military guard to maintain their employment while serving our country and to maximize on the skills they have gained by serving our country.   Dollar General is one such company that has successfully proven that hiring vets and employing active military guard is a smart investment.  We will be sharing a video from The SHRM Foundation on Dollar General’s commitment to the military community.

Noney Grier, HVSEP Vocational Rehab Specialist from Department of Veterans Affairs in Albany,  will discuss services available from the Department of Veterans Affairs, how veterans benefit the workplace (and vice versa), their transferable skills, effective communication styles within military culture and how that translates into effective communication with veterans during the hiring process and in the workplace. She will also educate us regarding military rank and structure so that we can be sensitive to veterans and understand their position within the military.

Michael Chierico, NYC ESGR Area Chair, from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) will explain the role of ESGR, how the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) impacts employers, provide us with information critical to employers when assisting current military and veterans, and their support of Hero 2 Hire (H2H).   H2H helps Reserve Component service members to connect to and find jobs with military-friendly companies.  H2H also offers career exploration tools, military-to-civilian skills translations, education and training resources.   Support for H2H is provided through the Department of Defense’s Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program.  Those attending will also be able to sign a statement of support for hiring military service members and veterans.

HRCI Credits are being applied for.
