Our presentation will focus on domestic violence statistics and why domestic violence is a workplace concern for employers. The presentation will define domestic violence, offer tactics of control, and explain why victims stay and how you can respond to domestic violence concerns in the workplace. A model policy and resources will also be offered to assist HR professionals and employers.
About our Speakers:
Leah Feldman, MPA, Director, Center for Victim Safety and Support, Family Services
Leah Feldman has been working in the field of interpersonal violence since 2005 and began her work in Dutchess County at Family Services in 2009. Currently, she is the Director of the Center for Victim Safety and Support at Family Services, overseeing non-residential rape crisis, crime victim, and domestic violence services. In this role, she has been instrumental in partnering with the community to implement and manage projects such as the High Risk Response Team, Lethality Assessment Project, and Domestic Abuse Response Teams. She participates in numerous committees including the Legislature’s Citizens Advisory Committee on Domestic Violence, the Domestic Violence Services Providers Committee, and the Universal Response to Domestic Violence Steering Committee, the Dutchess County High Risk Case Management Team, and the Child Advocacy Center Multidisciplinary Team. Prior to this role, Leah served as Project Coordinator of Universal Response to Domestic Violence. Leah holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Siena College and a Master’s in Public Administration from Marist College.
Christopher Pels, Director of Human Resources and Risk Management, Family Services
Chris is currently director of human resources and risk management at Family Services in Poughkeepsie New York. Chris is responsible for developing and coordinating all aspects of HR through the use of best practices as well as providing guidance and oversight of related risk management activities and organizational quality improvement initiatives. Chris’ work in HR focuses on using data to drive organizational change and aligning the various functions of HR with the overall strategy of the organization. This work includes facilitating the hiring and onboarding process for new employees; researching, developing, benchmarking, presenting, and implementing new benefits and policies; writing or editing employee and procedures manuals; developing and distributing RFP’s for new benefits providers; conducting employee and supervisor training; and developing and maintaining an affirmative action program.
Chris has a BA in psychology from Roberts Wesleyan College, an MA in psychology from Medaille College, and an Ed.D. in executive leadership from St. John Fisher College. Chris also has a certificate in leadership coaching through the McArdle Ramerman Center and the University of Rochester. Chris has taught at Keuka College and is currently an adjunct faculty member at Marist College.
Chris has been on the Rebuilding Together Dutchess County Board since October 2014 and sits on the marketing and development committee.
Chris and his wife Christina reside in the city of Poughkeepsie.
